A Hard Month

January is always a hard month.
Hard because I tend to look inwardly. I like to evaluate, write notes, pray, and make changes. It is a time of organizing, changing, thinking and growing.
How did I do last year?
How do I want to do this year?
What did I like?
What did I not like?
What do I need to do to make changes?
What is God calling me to change?
Am I willing to make those changes?
Big, hard concepts that always seem to bud in January. Why? Because January is a new year, fresh start, clean slate.
The perfect time for an inward look.
And although it is hard, it is good hard. If you know what I mean…
Well, I’m in the process of reading the Bible in 90 days with some of the other Homeschool Village writers.
A few days ago, we were in the book of Exodus.
I was reading the first part of chapter 31…
1 Then the LORD said to Moses, 2 “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of craftsmanship. 6 Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given skill to all the craftsmen to make everything I have commanded you: 7 the Tent of Meeting, the ark of the Testimony with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent— 8 the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, 9 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its stand— 10 and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.”
I have read this many times before but this time verse 3 and verse 6 both jumped out at me.
God not only called these men to do the work but He also filled them with His Spirit, with skill, ability and knowledge to do the job!
How cool is our God?
Friends, moms, teachers, leaders, sisters, daughters, helpers… you have all been called by God for the job you are doing. He has set a task before you… raising your kids, helping with older parents, educating, working, teaching… so many parts of you life are filled with God’s work.
And, at the new year, in January, we evaluate how we are doing in all of those areas. We critique ourselves, ask questions, set goals, change processes, reorganize… this month is perfect for that.
But, in all of the changing, goal setting, evaluating… don’t forget that God has not only called you to that job but He has also promised to equip you for it.
Even in those moments of failing and discouragement, God is right there wanting to help you with the task He has given you.
So be encouraged this January as you take a look at your life… Remember that God is with you, He has called you and He will equip you for the road ahead. Allow Him to lead the changes and evaluations and ask Him to help you do everything to your best ability through Him.
