It is that time of year when everyone is getting ready for Christmas. While a lot of people will get carried away with the decorating and the buying of gifts, I have been trying to spend more time in the Word and drawing myself closer to Jesus. Jesus is the whole reason we celebrate Christmas.
This past Sunday in our church service, our pastor’s sermon was on Mary. He spoke from the Gospel of Luke. The section he mentioned was when the angel Gabriel was sent from God to Mary to let her know that she was chosen to carry His Son, Jesus.
Luke 1:26-38
37 For nothing will be impossible with God.”
38 And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
I have heard this story and have read this scripture many times in the past. However, I noticed a couple of things this time that I had not thought of before. It has had me thinking a lot this week and I thought I would share it. The first thing I noticed in the exchange between Mary and Gabriel is, Mary only asked one question. She didn’t start throwing questions at Gabriel. She didn’t ask why God had chosen her, or anything. Very simply, she asked, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?” She didn’t have a husband yet and wanted to know how it could happen. It is a very honest question, that I am sure you or myself would have asked. Mary took the time to listen to Gabriel explain. I just loved how Gabriel finished with “For nothing will be impossible with God.”
The second thing that really popped out to me with this whole exchange is Mary’s response in verse 38, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Wow! That was it. Just like that! She was now going to be Jesus’ mother! She didn’t ask anymore questions, she didn’t question God, she just accepted it. Can you imagine doing that? Knowing that you would be the one carrying God’s son? Accepting that responsibilty with no further explanation?
As hard as I try, there are some days that I have questioned God about why he wants me to do something. Or I have asked Him why he has allowed something to happen. Yet, Mary accepted the news of being Jesus’ mother without any more questions. Imagine if we would do that. Imagine if we did everything that God asked of us to do. We would all be a little better off.
As we go into this Christmas season, let’s focus a little more on Jesus and the real reason we celebrate Christmas.
Blessings,

Love this, It is convicting to me and "iron sharpeneth irons" so thank you!
Thank you so much. It really convicted me as well and was something I felt I had to share.
yes, a wonderful post! that is one of my favorite verses because it is such an important reminder that really, all things are possible with God! He is in control and we only need to listen to His sweet prompting. thanks for sharing!
Jenilee, it is one of my favorite verses as well! I love knowing that God can take care of all of our needs! We serve an awesome and mighty God!
One of my favorite verses! I'm reading that scripture today and decided to search for meditations on it. Truly if we obeyed more and questioned less, God can do so much through us! Patsy from <a href="http://patsypat.blogspot.com"
